Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion

Kempo Kobudō Scotland Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Plan

Our Commitment

At Kempo Kobudō Scotland, we honour the rich heritage and profound philosophies of Kobudō and Katsuki Ryu Karate. We are dedicated to creating a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment where everyone feels respected and valued. Our commitment extends beyond our dojo to the wider community, fostering personal knowledge and development through physical education.

Our Principles

  • Equality: We provide equal opportunities for participation and advancement in all our programmes, regardless of age (5+), gender, race, ethnicity, disability, religion, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic background.

  • Diversity: We celebrate the diverse backgrounds, abilities, and perspectives of our students, instructors, and community partners. We believe that diversity enriches our dojo and enhances the martial arts experience for all.

  • Inclusion: We strive to ensure that all individuals feel included and able to participate fully in our activities, fostering a relaxed and friendly environment that encourages camaraderie, mutual respect, and the sharing of knowledge.

Our Actions

  1. Inclusive Membership and Programmes

    • Open Membership: We welcome individuals of all ages (5+), abilities, and skill levels, without requiring prior training in another martial art. Our curriculum is designed to be accessible and comprehensive.

    • Accessible Training: We offer specialised training in Kobudō and Katsuki Ryu Karate, adapting our teaching methods to meet the diverse needs of our students, including those with disabilities or special educational needs.

    • Safe Environment: All training is conducted using approved equipment within a safe and controlled environment, ensuring the well-being of all participants.

  2. Training and Development

    • Instructor Development: Our Master and nominated instructors receive regular training on EDI principles, inclusive teaching practices, and cultural competencies.

    • Student Growth: We encourage continuous personal development among our students, promoting values of respect, discipline, and mutual support in alignment with our martial arts philosophies.

  3. Community Engagement

    • Free Sessions and Classes: We organise and offer free sessions or classes to promote active lifestyles and community involvement, making martial arts accessible to all.

    • Outreach Programmes: Through community engagement initiatives, we seek to inspire and empower individuals of all backgrounds to participate in martial arts, fostering a sense of belonging and well-being.

    • Partnerships: We collaborate with local schools, organisations, and community groups to extend our reach and promote diversity within our dojo.

  4. Safe and Respectful Environment

    • Code of Conduct: We enforce a code of conduct that prohibits discrimination, bullying, and harassment, ensuring a respectful and supportive environment for everyone.

    • Reporting Procedures: Clear procedures are in place for reporting and addressing any incidents of discrimination or exclusion, with a commitment to confidentiality and appropriate action.

Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Regular Reviews: We regularly review our EDI practices and policies to assess their effectiveness and make necessary improvements, ensuring alignment with our Constitution and values.

  • Feedback Mechanisms: We seek feedback from students, parents, staff, and community partners to inform our ongoing efforts and better meet the needs of our diverse community.

  • Transparency and Accountability: We report on our progress annually to demonstrate our commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion.

Legal Compliance

  • Adherence to Legislation: We comply with all relevant laws, including the Equality Act 2010, to promote equality and prevent discrimination.

  • Safeguarding Policies: We ensure that all our policies and practices align with national and local guidelines on safeguarding and inclusion, especially when working with children and vulnerable groups.
